Portraits: with Sandra Koponen

Wednesday, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

May 15 – June 12

What makes a great portrait? From the realistic to the expressionistic, how do you capture the essence of a person in 2D? In this portrait class, each session will highlight different approaches to starting and making a portrait: alternately starting with lines, shading, shapes, mass or features. Using a model, a photograph and perhaps memory, students will be encouraged to do several studies from which they choose one or two to develop. This is not an “anatomy class”, though tips will be given how to keep the structure of the face in reasonable proportion. Students can use the medium they are most comfortable with: pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, oil crayon, magic marker, water color, crayon, and acrylic are all acceptable, but newsprint and charcoal are recommended for the live drawing sessions, and other mediums may be recommended based on students’ interests.

Price includes model fee.
