ASCC’s Summer Art in the Library Programs

Valatie 2018Summertime is time for exploring art, reading, and writing in new and exciting ways! The Art School of Columbia County presents its fifth year of its free summer Art in the Library programs held in community libraries across Columbia County and beyond. The programs are open to families and all supplies are provided. You do not have to reside in the town to participate – visitors are welcome. Several of the programs have free take-home art kits to further learning and creating at home.

Some upcoming programs are:

Monday July 16 from 2:30-4:30 pm at the Nassau Free Library (Nassau NY) We will learn about radial symmetry, and the art of Olana. We will be making our own print blocks and printing, including golds and metallic hues for extra richness. Suggested for grades 3-12, families welcome. We will also be learning about poets and artists who have been inspired by the rich culture of this region. Tuesday July 17 from 10-11 am at the North Chatham Free Library (North Chatham NY). Spend a day at the beach! We will be learning about e e cumming’s poem “Maggie and Milly and Molly and May” and create a special beach-themed art project with watercolor and mixed media. Tuesday July 17 from 1-3 pm at the Valatie Library (Valatie NY) we will be learning about Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem “Recuerdo” (I remember), and creating sparkling treasure boxes from up-cycled materials, and then write our own special memory to tuck inside. Thursday July 19 from 10 am – 12 pm at the North Chatham Free Library (North Chatham NY). It’s warming up! We will be enjoying the poem “Bee! I’m expecting you!” by Emily Dickinson and creating a thumb-printed invitation for younger children, and for older children, create a hexagon accordion book, which we will fill with creatures in our imagined landscape. On Thursday July 19 from 1:30-3:30 at the New Lebanon Library (New Lebanon), ASCC will be teaching the program Exploring Radial Symmetry for grades 3- 12 & families.  Get inspired by Olana. Create and be inspired by Islamic art and explore radial symmetry as we make our own prints.  We will also be learning about poets and artists who have been inspired by the rich culture of this region.  Please call the library if you wish to pre-register (suggested but not required): 518- 518-794-8844.
